So word has been out for a few days now, and Ultimate Comics Fallout was released Sunday to a few quiet nods from people who know what an Ultimate Universe is, and a response from Glenn Beck (the man deserves his own special category). Since we have now officially gone through the process of mainstream media shrugging and/or vaguely acknowledging that a fictional character has died and replaced by another equally fictional character, I think it’s time we get some actually commentary on this.
I was pleasantly surprised when I read the news Wednesday morning that Spider-Man had been replaced by someone who wasn’t a white protestant Anglo Saxon. My initial response to the death of Peter Parker was “Oh, good, I can’t wait for a clone to replace him.” Let’s look at the easy way outs. Read the rest of this entry
I really used to like Mark Millar. He was bombastic, exciting, and while you wouldn’t want his characters as a friend, you knew you wanted to follow them. I hear a lot of criticism about what he’s done, and a lot of it is true, but Millar still managed to make me feel exhilarated at one point. I remember reading the Ultimates during the trial of the Hulk. The scene where Nick Fury out-right lies to Bruce Banner that he’s been saved and then dumps him in the middle of the ocean to die is probably still one of my favourite moments in comics history. Avengers Vs. New Ultimates is not that Mark Millar. Read the rest of this entry
Clearly there are not enough people talking about comics these days, so my good friend, Matthew Ishii and I decided to make our own podcast called Indirect Market. We talk about one broad topic in the comics industry every week and explore it to the best of our ability. Which, to be fair, isn’t much ability at all. The topic can range from shonen manga to costume changes in DC. This episode’s issue is Resets and Retools! Of course we’re focusing on Flashpoint for DC and the Death of Ultimate Spider-Man for Marvel. Both of these are spectacular events that require in depth commentary.[soundcloud params=”auto_play=false&show_comments=true” url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/18061846″%5D
